BP Local Avatars + BuddyBoss
Give every BuddyBoss member and group a unique avatar automatically. Generate and store avatars locally so no member ever shows a blank placeholder and your site stops making unnecessary calls to external services.
What is BP Local Avatars
BP Local Avatars is a free WordPress plugin by PhiloPress that automatically generates a unique Identicon avatar for any BuddyBoss member or group that has not uploaded one. When a member registers, logs in, or is created, the plugin produces a distinctive geometric avatar in both thumbnail and full sizes and saves it directly to your server — no blank profile images, no grey silhouettes, and no dependency on external services to display who is in your community.
Because avatars are stored locally, your BuddyBoss site stops making repeated calls to gravatar.com on every page load. For communities with hundreds or thousands of members, this reduces external HTTP requests significantly. Members who already have a Gravatar or who have uploaded a custom avatar through their BuddyBoss profile are not affected — BP Local Avatars only fills in the gaps.
The plugin includes a bulk generation tool so you can generate avatars for all existing members and groups in one action. It works within the existing BuddyBoss avatar directory structure, respects the defined thumb and full avatar sizes, and does not overwrite avatars that are already in place.
Key Features of BP Local Avatars
Auto-Generated Member Avatars
Automatically creates a unique Identicon avatar for every BuddyBoss member who signs up, logs in, or is created without one. Each avatar is geometrically unique so no two members share the same default image in member directories or activity feeds.
Group Avatar Generation
Generates avatars for BuddyBoss groups that have no image, not just individual members. Group avatars appear in group directories, activity feeds, and group headers so every group has a visual identity from the moment it is created.
Local Avatar Storage
All generated avatars are saved directly to your server inside the existing BuddyBoss avatar directory structure. Avatars load from your own hosting instead of triggering external requests to gravatar.com on every page view.
Bulk Generation
Generate avatars for all existing members and groups in one action from WordPress Dashboard > Settings > Discussion. Essential when installing on an established BuddyBoss community where many profiles already exist without avatars.
Custom Upload Support
Members can still upload a custom avatar via their BuddyBoss profile at any time. Groups can upload an image via Group > Manage > Photo. The generated avatar is a fallback only and is never shown once a custom image is in place.
Multiple Avatar Styles
Defaults to Identicon geometric patterns but also supports Gravatar’s Wavatar and MonsterID styles. Adjust the style in the plugin file to match the visual identity you want for your BuddyBoss community.

Use Cases and Examples
New Communities Launching Without Blank Profiles
A community builder launches a new BuddyBoss site and opens registration. Within the first week, hundreds of members sign up but most do not upload profile photos. Instead of rows of grey silhouettes in the member directory, every member gets a unique Identicon avatar generated automatically at signup. The directory looks complete from day one, and new visitors see an active, populated community rather than a grid of blank profiles.

Established Sites Cleaning Up Blank Group Avatars
A membership site running BuddyBoss has accumulated dozens of groups, many without any uploaded image. Group admins rarely return to add photos after creation. The site owner installs BP Local Avatars and runs the bulk generation tool once. Every group instantly receives a distinct generated avatar, making group directories and activity feeds easier to browse and giving each group a more established appearance.

Communities in Regions Where Gravatar Is Blocked
A course creator builds a BuddyBoss community serving members in countries where gravatar.com is blocked or unreliable. Without BP Local Avatars, those members see broken image icons or long delays as the browser times out on external avatar requests. With the plugin active, all avatars are served from the site’s own server and the profile experience is identical for every member regardless of location.

Benefits of Integrating BP Local Avatars with BuddyBoss
Add Benefit Image 1
- Complete Member Directory from Day One: Every BuddyBoss member profile shows a unique avatar from the moment they register, without requiring them to upload a photo. Member directories, activity feeds, group member lists, and forum post avatars all display consistent images for every member so your community looks active and complete even when brand new.
- No External Avatar Requests: Without BP Local Avatars, every page view triggers HTTP requests to gravatar.com for each member without a Gravatar. On pages showing 20 or 30 members that is 20 to 30 external requests per load. Storing avatars locally eliminates those requests and reduces load times across all BuddyBoss pages.
- Unique Identity for Every Group: BuddyBoss groups that launch without a custom photo get a generated avatar that distinguishes them visually in group directories and activity feeds. Group leaders do not need to add a photo before the group looks like a real presence in the community.
- Consistent Experience Regardless of Location: Members in countries where gravatar.com is blocked no longer see broken images or delays from failed external requests. Because all avatars load from your own server, the BuddyBoss experience is identical for every member worldwide.

Add Benefit Image 3
- Zero Disruption to Existing Avatars: BP Local Avatars only generates images for profiles and groups that have none. Members who already uploaded a custom photo and groups that already have an image are completely unaffected. The plugin works silently in the background, filling gaps without touching anything already in place.
- One-Time Setup for Existing Communities: Installing on an established BuddyBoss site does not require any per-member action. Run the bulk generation tool once and every member and group without an avatar gets one immediately. After that the plugin handles all new sign-ups automatically with no ongoing maintenance required.
